I thought she was sleeping...

I think we need to reevaluate the way we do quiet time.

Anna learned how to climb onto the toilet to get into the bathroom cabinet. Fortunately, we keep the medicines above the sink (which she can't get into).

With the help of spray and wash and a magic eraser, everything is cleaned up.

5K

Starting out, smiling at Anna

On Saturday, I ran a 5k. I found out about it before we even moved here and have been training for it. I was a bit nervous because my leg had been hurting me but I took some ibuprofen beforehand and it didn't bother me too much. The race was up in Volcano Village (which is near the volcano national park) and the weather was perfect. Sunny and cool but warm enough once you got going. Poor Jason and Anna were quite cold. There were a lot of trees so they kept things nicely shaded.
Rounding the final turn.

I hadn't done a race in a LONG time and I was a little surprised at how nervous/concerned I was. I worried about my leg, being too cold (I'm used to hot now but not cold), the altitude (it was at 4000 ft) and had very low expectations for my time. I needn't have worried, I was a rock star! Once I got going my leg slightly twinged but not enough to slow me down. It was warm enough that the shade felt good. I didn't notice the altitude and I came in in 25:44 which averages 8:18 per mile! I even passed someone near the end that I had been running with for the last half. It was so great that I'm already planning what I'm going to do next time.

There was even a playground for Anna.

Snorkeling

Last Friday, we went to Kona for a quasi-job interview thing for Jason. He was meeting with an engineer that has some drafting work to get done. Jason calls it a definite maybe. Since his dad had the day off, we all went and made a trip of it. As we seem to have to do when we go to Kona, we went swimming. This time we chose a calm pool near one of the resorts. After Jason noticed that there was some reef and a goodly amount of fish, we decided to snorkel. Since we weren't planning on it, we left our camera in the car.

This is the first time either of us had ever done it and I have to say, it took me a little while to get the hang of it. I'll be the first to admit that I am not a strong swimmer. I always like to say that in the event of an emergency I wouldn't drown but I'm not about to go swim laps at the pool. However, since we've been going to the beach so much since moving here I've been getting better. So when I went out of the little protected pools, I was kind of tossed around a bit. It didn't take me long to decide to stay in the area. There wasn't as much to see but it worked much better for me. Plus, it turns out I'm not good at only breathing through my mouth. I thought I was but then my goggles fogged up.

Even with all of these problems, I quite enjoyed it. The fish were so colorful and generally didn't mind my being there. The most plentiful ones I saw were bright yellow and looked like the one in Finding Nemo that likes bubbles. Sadly, I made the Nemo connection whenever I could. The fish that looked like Gill was really exciting. There was also some purple stuff that was on the rocks and I could see it kind of flow with the water. It was very exciting and wasn't even at a place that is known for good snorkeling. It can only get better.

What a Cute Bee!

I thought this was a way clever idea and a cute commercial. Plus, paint chips make me think of Kristen.

Disclaimer: I don't have any opinion about their paint, I just like the paint chips and the song. Sorry this doesn't fit on the screen. It's as small as I can make it.

A Great Big Ball of Charisma

(The Emperor's New Groove) Anna cracks me up these days. I know, something new and different. She is starting to talk more like a little adult. It seems like before she says anything, she starts the sentence with "probably" or "I think". If she is asking for something or to do something she will ask "will that work?" or "how bout that?"

Anna has decided that serious is the way to go for pictures these days, complete with head tilt. I cannot believe how old she looks in this picture.

When she plays, she makes little 'houses' where she puts all of her toys. So far, we have had behind the couch, on the porch and in the hallway. She lines everything up and says we have to knock to come in. Jason says she seems to be nesting. I guess this need to have your own space to be in charge of starts pretty early in girls.

She is a big Dora fan and when we are in the car, she often talks about it like we are on the show. She will ask, "where are we going?" and I'll say where we are going. Then, inevitably Swiper will come and she'll be all worried until we we tell him no swiping.

As always, her dancing is great. Here is a little video of her latest form of it.

I love that she sings "dancing" as she goes and the little woah cracks me up.

Rainbow Connection

We've noticed that rainbows here don't necessarily mean more than just being a rainbow. With the weather here they have them all the time. This past weekend, we say a full rainbow while we were driving. It was beautiful.

They have rainbows on their license plates and driver's licenses. There are some waterfalls near us called Rainbow Falls. Anna even wants them in her hair.

Not the Day I Planned

It started off innocently enough, Jason thought he would exercise and went swimming at our local pool. When he came home a little before noon he started to feel nauseous but didn't need to throw up. Then he started to feel light headed and laid down on the floor in the bathroom (this is where he called me in). When I came in his hands started getting tingly like when something falls asleep and seizing up (he was getting kind of scared at this point, it's better when your body works). I tried to rub his hands and arms at which part he started to hyperventilate. We were kind of freaked out at this point and I don't like to mess around with difficulty breathing so I called for an ambulance.

The EMTs got here pretty quickly so I left them to it and spent time with Anna (Jason was in good hands at this point). She was getting a little bit scared at this point too so we hung out together and read books, it seemed to help her calm down. After a little bit, one guy came out and let me know what was going on. It seems Jason was REALLY dehydrated and his blood pressure and heartrate were scary low (in the neighborhood of 70/10 and 40ish beats per minute). They gave him water and juice in an attempt to not have to go to the hospital but it became obvious that he needed more fluid and faster than he could drink at home so they took him to the hospital. On route they started an IV. Anna and I followed in the car after a little while.

When we got to him in the hospital, he was totally wrapped up in warm blankets. His blood pressure at this point was 105/60 which is way better. When the nurse came in, she said it was spectacular. I guess hospital spectacular is different than healthy people spectacular. We stayed there for a little while but there wasn't much going on and Anna was getting restless so we went home to let him rehydrate.

By this point, it was around 2:30. Anna went right to sleep and after her full nap Jason called me and was ready to be picked up at around 5. When he got home he was still thirsty and STARVING (seeing as he had missed lunch and all) so we decided to go out to dinner. Sadly, we got lost on the way to the restaurant we had in mind. Once we found it, it was closed. We finally found a place and had dinner. Even after eating he was still pretty wiped out so we had a restful evening. He's been drinking a lot of Gatorade since then.

It was a pretty intense day. I spent a lot of it reassuring Anna and explaining things in ways that she can understand. She got to learn about ambulances, hospitals and copays. Funny aside, we waited in the car while Jason paid a co-pay and when Anna was wondering why we were waiting, I told her that we had to pay for them to help us and if we didn't, they would have to keep Daddy. She thought that was funny too.
