Gettin' Crafty

Now and then, Anna and I do crafts. Here are some pictures from the times I thought to get out the camera.

This started out as a simple macaroni necklace. Of course that wasn't fancy enough for Anna. She wanted to paint the macaronis first.

As you can see, she loves painting.

Then, once they were dry, she strung 'em up.

Here she is wearing the finished product, and so proud. I don't know if this was a different day or if she had just changed her dress. I'm betting on changed her dress; she loves to change clothes in the middle of the day. I've found myself saying (as apparently my mom did before me), "One outfit per day in the laundry."

Then, we played with glitter. I read about this one in a book I have called Unplugged Play. It's a pretty cool book with lots of ideas for things for kids to do. It's broken down by age group and kind of activity. In the book it says to use confetti but they didn't have it at the store when we went and what's more fun than glitter?

I love her look of concentration as she sprinkles the glitter on the glue. What you can't tell from the picture is that she's shaking that container with all her might and generally getting it just to the side of where the glue is.

Our picture. For the most part, I put down the glue and she added the glitter. I think we added a little bit more before we stopped.

We've been working on some Halloween crafts but that will have to be for another post. Let me just say, looking at cute crafty kids blogs is totally dangerous. I have a new favorite one: Frugal Family Fun. The stuff is way cute, actually looks doable and uses simple supplies. Another one I like to look at is Little Page Turners. This one has tie-ins to children's books. We haven't done any of these ones yet but I like looking at them and thinking I might some day.

Half Way

Here are some pictures from the ultrasound. We got the one 2d picture and some 3d ones. This one is the crispest even if it's only half a face.

I am just past my 20th week in this pregnancy so I'm now half way along. All in all, things are going well. A couple of weeks ago, we had our ultrasound and found out we are having a little boy. Fortunately, we've been preparing Anna for this for some time so she isn't disappointed that it's not a girl. (At first she would say the new baby could only sleep in her room if it was a girl and a boy would have a sleep in our room. She is now willing to share a room with her little brother.) He seems to be growing well and all looks fine.

I am feeling him move around quite a bit now and his little kicks are even strong enough to be felt from the outside. Unfortunately, they are more like isolated kicks so it's been hard to have Jason or Anna feel them. Anna says she has but based on her reaction, I don't think she has. I always feel like when he kicks it's like him saying, "hi Mom!"

My biggest complaint these days is being hot. The weather is always the same, upper 80s. This may sound nice but frankly, it gets hot. I hear from people that live here that it will get cooler after October. I really hope so because frankly, I've never been good with hot. The heat is then compounded by the support hose I get/have to wear. Other then the fact that they make me more hot, I don't really mind them. I can tell a big difference with how my legs feel when I wear them and they make doing things possible. They do lengthen out how long it takes me to get ready in the mornings (since I have to put my feet up for 20 minutes before putting them on) but with lower expectations, it's going well.

Between the heat and getting bigger, I've had to scale down what I can get accomplished in a day. Generally by around 3:30 or 4 I need to have what we call Mommy break time. This is pretty much just time when I sit with the fan on me and rest for a bit before I have to get up and make dinner. If I don't do this, dinner becomes something like salad or even just leftovers.

Anna has been a rock star during this whole ordeal. She lets me sleep in in the mornings (she gets up before Jason leaves so he gets her breakfast and turns on a show), mostly leaves me alone during my break time, understands that when my feet are up I can't do things for her and just generally takes good care of me. Earlier on, she wanted me to see something outside so she set up two chairs in the doorway: one for me to sit on and one for me to put my feet up.
We took this on Saturday while we were out hiking. As you can see, I was on water bottle duty.

So, we have gotten through the sick, just looking fat part of the pregnancy and are embarking on the uncomfortable, so when are you due part. Should be fun.

Evening at the Beach

A little bit ago, we went to the beach after dinner. It was getting dark so we just stayed for a little bit. Even thought I didn't go in the water (darn support hose), it was a lovely evening and pleasantly cool.

Putting on Anna's floaty.

Heading in. Jason said the water was actually warmer than the air.

Splashing around. I was trying to take pictures of them but this darn paddle boarder was right behind them. Grr.

Playing in the sand. By this point, Anna had found some friends and was playing with them. How did I get such a little social girl?

Of course the sunset was beautiful.

All wrapped up and ready to go home. Even though it wasn't for very long, it was a great evening activity. I'll have to remember it for when the days get longer again.

Funky Tree Friday

I don't know when I became such a flaky blogger but our pictures are off of the camera now so hopefully I'll do better. Since it's Friday, I thought I'd start up again with this crazy tree.

We saw these at a park. It's funny but a lot of trees here have the most amazing leaf spans. They really take up all the space they can.
When you look up into the tree, the branches are going every which way. I would have thought they would just stick a direction and go with it but not these. They're like the indecisive branches that keep thinking the other direction will be better.
And then they have giant seed pods. This only a partial one with Jason's foot for scale. For those of you who don't know, Jason has a big foot. In fact, it's a foot long (handy for measuring things) so that's a whole lot of seed pod. If you're standing under the tree when one of them decides it's time to fall, look out because it could probably do some damage.

So as Anna loves to tell people, I'm pregnant. I'm due at the beginning of February which is when Anna's birthday is. They will be pretty much exactly four years apart. Let me just say, I didn't really want to have my first two children four years apart.

I have a favorite scripture story. It's in Mosiah 24 where the people of Alma are in bondage to the wicked priests. They are treated horribly. Not only were the adults persecuting the adults but they had the children persecute the children. They were even told that they cannot pray. Not a happy time to be one of the people of Alma.

My plan was not to have my children this far apart. In fact, way back when I was living with Kristen, I was started to get concerned about the spacing. We were trying to get pregnant even though the whole no-job thing was tricky. I often said that if I could get pregnant and know that Jason would have a job before the baby was born, that would be great. In spite of mentally knowing that is probably wasn't the best time, emotionally I didn't care. I wanted a baby.

Then we moved in with Jason's parents. The thing with wanting a baby is that the desire pretty much doesn't go away until you get what you want. At least that's how it was with me. It just kept getting stronger. After a while, when my period would start, I would cry. I was generally able to hold it in until I went to bed, then I would break down and sob into my pillow. Two experiences stand out. One day I was at church and the teacher was pregnant and I felt literally empty inside. I had never felt that before and it was not pleasant. Another time, again at church I was just watching a baby in our ward (of which there were thankfully very few) during sacrament meeting and just started to cry. It got so bad that I couldn't sing the closing song. It was no surprise when my period started later that day. Needless to say, I was beginning to feel like I had a burden that was too strong for me to carry.

The people of Alma didn't stop praying though. Their prayers just turned inward. It says in verse 12, "And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him: and he did know the thoughts of their hearts." During this time I did a lot of praying. Not just for a baby but for me to be able to wait for the right time for him to come to our family. Through previous blessings, I knew we were going to have more kids. I strongly felt that there wasn't anything wrong with me physically, we were really just waiting for the timing to be right. This was very helpful because it gave me an end to look forward to, even though I didn't know when the end would be. Now and then I worried there was something I was supposed to be doing that I wasn't and that was the delay. I came to realize that we were just waiting on timing.

For the people of Alma, the Lord didn't deliver them right away. Instead, he eased the burdens on their backs. More specifically, in verse 15 it says, "And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord." So he didn't stop the hardness, he just made it so they could handle it. Amazingly, the same happened to me, to an extent. I wouldn't say that I was ever really cheerful about the whole thing but I was getting better by the end. I was able to enjoy babies without being sad. The crying may not have gone away completely but it definitely got better. Basically, I was able to kind of put it all on the back burner for the time being.

Then I got pregnant. I'm sure medically you could say that since we stopped stressing over it, it happened but I know that it was also the right time. Just after I found out I was pregnant, I was sitting in church and thinking about it and I got the feeling like I had passed the test. It was a very comforting feeling. Most importantly, I know that the Lord helped me get through that. I often think of the hymn How Firm a Foundation. It's a favorite song right now, especially verses 3 and 7 which say,
Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not, I cannot, desert to his foes;
The soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no never, no never forsake!

My Oven

Since moving here, I have been trying to figure out my oven. I know that every oven cooks differently so I was all sett to have a couple of first frustrating baking experiences before I figured it out. I just didn't expect what I got.

Everything burned! Or came out on the dark side and dry if I pulled it out when it started to smell done rather then when the timer went off. I had the feeling that it was running a little hot so I started with just turning the temperature down 25 degrees from whatever the recipe called for. It didn't seem to be enough.

Remembering the sage advice of my sister-in-law Marrisse, I got an oven thermometer so I could see what was actually going on. On Friday I braved the heat, turned on the oven and did some testing. Here are my results:

Where it's set The Actual Temperature
150 225
200 275/300
250 350
275 375
300 425
350 450

Well no wonder I kept burning stuff. I didn't go any higher because when do you need to cook at a higher temperature than 450? What surprised me with these results was that the temperature didn't stay a simple 75 degrees too high, it was more like a sliding scale. I think I'll post my chart next to the oven so I'm not swayed by the numbers on the dial.

Dancing...WithTheStars

Last week they announced the new cast of Dancing With The Stars. I don't really have anything to say about any of them because I don't really know who they are. When I first read the list of the new cast, they very helpfully said how each person was known. That helped me recognize the person who was on The Hills (seeing as I have never seen that show but have heard of it) or who the different athletes are. One thing that struck me this season is that there don't seem to be very many athletes. I think that's too bad because they tend to do quite well.

In reading the announcements, I also read some of the comments on the articles. They are so funny. The general gist is that these are just a bunch of has-beens or not real stars who are known for stupid reasons. Well, duh! My thought is, real stars are too busy for the time commitment it takes to do the show. It's like the people forget that at the start of previous seasons, they didn't know who the people were either.
